Read my Mind Video

The Read My Mind video is disjuncture which means having no relevance to the song lyrics. The video for "Read My Mind" was shot in Tokyo. In an interview, Brandon Flowers called the tune "kind of our favorite song" and promised the clip would find the band "in Tokyo, on bikes.“ The video shows the The Killers in Tokyo, seemingly just having a good time and carrying out activities with the freedom of youth. These include riding different bicycles through the Tokyo streets. The band are also seen in a traditional arcade playing session Guitar Freaks and Drummania, playing with leaves in a Tokyo park with some Japanese school children, and interacting with Japanese children's TV character Gachapin. The various scenes are intercut with footage of Flowers singing in the middle of the city at a traffic interchange. The video ends with the four members of the band in a hotel.

The video premiered on 8th February 2007, on MTV as part of their "Spankin' New Music Week." On the March 23rd 2007 episode of VH1's Top 20 Countdown, "Read My Mind" was number one, making it the first time, a Killers' video had reached that rank.

This song is about a near break up, the girl's tired of him, and wants to move on, but he's going through all these memories that they shared etc and is trying to get her to feel the way he does about the situation - that they can move on together. He knows she's right and wants to get out of the town and escape the rut that he's fallen into...so he goes to her house to see if she's read his mind and wants to reignite their passion, not be scared, and start life anew with him. In the end, the beautiful "the stars are blazing..." line, I think refers to them driving off together, with everything resolved and wonderful again.

Shooting schedule

This is our shooting schedule, it shows the dates in which we will be filming for our music video. Three of the dates are in the half term week off, which we are hoping we will be able to film during. If not, then we will have to cram a lot of filming in in the first few days back as the rough cut has to be completed by the 3rd November.

Magazine Ad Analysis

The Blueprint 3 is the eleventh studio album by American rapper Jay-Z, released September 8, 2009, on Roc Nation. It is the final installment in The Blueprint trilogy, preceded by The Blueprint (2001) and The Blueprint 2: The Gift & The Curse (2002). The advertisement includes Jay-z’s name at the top in the largest font, which is very common in most advertisements. The main picture is a bunch of instruments stuck together, a very abstract image. It has three red lines through it representing that the album is the third blueprint album and it also has the release date near the bottom of the ad. The very bottom has an image, which is the logo for Roc Nation, Jay-z’s record label.

Kingdom of Rust is the fourth studio album from British indie rock band Doves. The album was released on 6 April 2009 in the UK via Heavenly Records. Along with the jay-z advertisement, this also has the band name in the largest font and the album name directly underneath.
This follows the conventions of most advertisements as it has the release date at the bottom. This also includes a quote from the magazine “Q” and the Doves website.

Shot List

This is our shot list for our music video. It will help us to establish which shot should be done when, it also helped with making the Storyboard.

9 Frame

Arctic Monkeys-When the sun goes down

0:10 In this scene the lyrics say “Who’s that girl there” and there is a medium shot of a girl who could be perceived as unkept and in the background there is a housing estate where someone like her would live.

0:13 The very next scene shows the same girl stood on a balcony of what we assume is the housing blocks that we see in the scene before and she is smoking a cigarette.

0:18 This is a medium-long shot and it shows the girl walking away with a man and the lyrics to this shot say “I doubt she does receipts” which sways us to think she may be a prostitute.

0:28 In this shot we see a medium shot of the man taking food from her plate with his knife and fork and the lyrics to this say “Give him half a chance, I’ll bet he’ll rob you if he can” so this is a perfect example of illustration.

0:43 “he told Roxanne to put on her red light.” This shot shows the man meeting up with the girl and the lyrics make us think of the red light district and we’ve already established we think she may be a prostitute and this aids us in this idea.1:49 In this shot we see a few men packing some stuff into a car and the lyrics say “They say hechanges when the sun goes down” which leads us to think, what is he going to do? The lyrics just before this say “I start to wonder what his story might be.”2:27 This shot is a close up and shows the girl outside and she is looking quite upset, the lyrics say “She must be fucking freezing.”3:01 Medium close up as he leans in to kiss her cheek the lyrics say “What a scummy man” and this is nearly the end of the song and throughout the full song he is going to see her and we think she’s a prostitute so this makes us think he has been paying her for sex.

3:10 This shot starts as a medium shot and zooms in to a close up to show his eyes more as the lyrics say “Can see it in his eyes yeah, that he’s got a nasty plan.”

Treatment

The Killers are an American rock band from Las Vegas, Nevada that formed in 2001. The band consists of Brandon Flowers (vocals, keyboards), Dave Keuning (guitar, backing vocals), Mark Stoermer (bass guitar, backing vocals) and Ronnie Vannucci Jr. (drums, percussion). An alternative rock band, The Killers draw some of their influences from the music styles of the 1980s. The group's debut album, Hot Fuss (2004) brought the band mainstream success. The Killers' second album, Sam's Town, was released in 2006, and compilation album Sawdust containing B-sides, rarities, and new material, was released in 2007. Their third studio album, Day & Age, produced by Stuart Price, was released in 2008. Daddy’s Eyes is featured on the Sawdust album and has not been released as a single by the band.

Our video will be amplification and not follow a storyline, after watching ‘Somebody told me’ also by The Killers it gave us ideas on how we want to produce our music video. Instruments will be visible throughout the shooting, close ups of the drumbeat and guitar will be seen during the video. Trance/techno lights will be played on the background along with a video of the band. The majority of the video will be shot within the studio however the background video will be done out of the college.

Risk Assessment

Before I start shooting for my music video I need to undergo a risk assessment. This is to make sure I know what to do incase any unwanted circumstances pop up. I made a small list of possible risks that could injure the actors or hinder my filming, and then listed the ways these can be solved.

Breakdown of lyrics

I'll tell you what you wanna know (0:11-00:13)
But boy you better listen close (00:15-00:17)
People gonna tell you lies (00:19-00:21)
Don't let it come as a surprise (00:22-00:25)

That woman's on my back again (00:26-00:28)
I know she's got the best intentions (00:29-00:32)
but you began to realize (00:33-00:36)
You know got your daddy's eyes (00:37-00:39)

And there's something I wanna say (00:40-00:43)
I love her too (00:44-00:47)
And all of this has got nothing to do with you (00:48-00:52)

And I'd like to stay but I can't because (00:53-00:57)
I've been fooling around (00:58-1:00)
And I know that you called because (1:00-1:03)
you never even knew that it was hurting me (1:03-1:06)

When you put it on the other hand (1:09-1:11)
when you're old enough to understand (1:13-1:16)
That glove will bring it all to life (1:17-1:19)
I didn't say that made it right (1:20-1:22)

cause that woman's on my back again (1:24-1:27)
I know she's got the best intentions (1:28-1:31)
when you begin to realize (1:31-1:34)
You know you got your daddy's eyes (1:35-1:38)

And theres something I wanted to say (1:38-1:41)
I love her too (1:41-1:46)
And all of this has got nothing to do with you (1:46-1:50)

And I'd like to stay but I can't (1:51-1:55)
because I've been fooling around (1:56-1:58)
And I know that you called (1:58-2:00)
because you never even knew that it was hurting me (2:01-2:04)

And I'd like to stay but I can't (2:05-2:09)
because I've been fooling around (2:10-2:12)
And I know that you called (2:12-2:14)
because you never even knew that it was hurting me (2:15-2:18)

Sometimes people get tired (2:18-2:22)
And I woke up a little too late to lie (2:26-2:31)
Dreams should last a long time (2:33-2:38)
This is not what I'd call goodbye (2:40-2:49)

*Guitar Solo*

And I'd love to stay but I can't (3:17-3:19)
because I've been fooling around (3:19-3:22)
And I know that you called (3:23-3:25)
because you never even knew that it was hurting me (3:26-3:29)

And I'd love to stay but I can't (3:30-3:33)
because I've been fooling around (3:34-3:37)
And I know that you called (3:37-3:39)
because you never even knew that it was hurting me (3:39-3:43)

Me… (3:43-3:45)

I love her too… (3:56-4:00)

Research into Jason Mraz

After looking at Jason Mraz CD cover and Website you can see that he has carried the theme on both with the man sketched with a trilby hat on. Also the links down the left hand side of his website to navigate to the other pages are in the same font as the writing on his album. At the bottom left of the page you can see it says voice, music, silence, you can select any of these which you prefer. If you select his voice, he talks to you about the site and the mouth on the sketched person moves to the words. His type of music is rock and soul and aimed at teenagers and over as it’s not really quick and dance music.

As you can see the theme carries on within the site, from page to page. On each page he has different sketched drawings to symbolize what you are looking at, this site is very creative and has used many technologies to make it as it is.

Initial ideas

Here is my initial ideas that I have designed, I have made this to show brief ideas of camera, special effects, setting and mise en scene, that I have up to now, as this is only my initial ideas they may change when i come to produce my video as my ideas will alter due to more in depth research.

Deconstruction of Arctic Monkeys

The Killers are an indie rock band so I have decided to analyse a video, CD cover and website of the Arctic Monkeys.

The Arctic Monkeys are an indie rock band. I am going to analyse their music video “fluorescent adolescent”. This video completely subverts the expectations of everyone as everyone would expect to see the long shaggy hair which is shown with most indie artists and the instruments are not shown in the video whereas those would be expected to be shown. Most indie rock bands have bits with them performing in but the Arctic Monkeys seem to prefer the narrative and in this video the narrative shows a group of clowns and a group of non-clowns fighting at an old warehouse, there are flashbacks showing that the leaders of each group used to be friends as young kids. Both leaders attempt to kill each other throughout the video. When the video comes to an end the non clown leader attempts to run the clown leader over, the clown leader then see’s that the car has been leaking petrol and then drops his lighter to see the car with his former friend in burn up in flames. In the lyrics at the end it says “ took a left off last laugh lane” and I think this refers to when the guy tries to run over the clown but then the clown gets the last laugh when he burns the car down and he also says “ and your not coming back again” which shows the guy isn’t coming back because he’s dead. Other than this the lyrics don’t reflect the video, which means the relationship between the lyrics and visual is disjuncture.

The font for the CD cover is not exactly the same but it is the same style (Fancy distorted text) as on their website.

On the releases tab on their website there is a list of their albums and the cd cover I chose is also there as shown above. On the CD cover it is just shown as a plain usual street but then there is bright psychedelic colours in the windows to make it stand out and to make sure the cover doesn’t look too plain. On the website at the top there is a silhouette of the full band which blend in with the text also.

Kooks CD Cover Analysis

•  What genre is the production?
The genre for the kooks is indie.

•  How is the genre established?
The kooks are representative of indie by their long, shaggy hair, acoustic guitars and the style of clothes they wear.

•  How does the mise en scene support the
Genre?
The acoustic guitars support the indie genre as most of their songs are played with those guitars and also their clothing they wear show they are quite indie.

•  How will the generic elements of the
Production appeal to the audience?

The target audience would be mainly older teenagers and young men and women as they are the stereotypical groups that are known to like indie music.
